Planted with Purpose
The Garlic Farmers SA story began one hot summer night in Pretoria during December 2000. My wife, Julie had a dream, woke me up and took me outside at 04h00 in the morning to show me our front yard. Whilst pointing a finger at the front yard she said:
“I know you are a farmer at heart.
Use this ground for something.”
The front yard consisted of two pieces of lawn separated by the entrance motor pathway. On the fringes of the lawn were planted Karee and Lilac trees. The size of the two pieces of lawn together was 155 square meters or 1.5% of a hectare.

Testimonials
I started with only 5000 cloves purchased from Garlic Farmers SA. I was impressed with their response on every watts app question I asked (even when I am a very small "beginner")
They encouraged me to start small with what I have and their family story was the reason I made the decision. They started 23 years ago in a residential area. If they could do it, I can do it!!!!
I had little money, no infrastructure, not enough water, no tractor to prepare the land, little fertilizer etc. Time was running out to plant ect. But I invested in good seed at Garlic Farmers SA. I also had to harvest two weeks earlier because it became very hot very quickly here in the Bushveld.
Obviously I took the photo of the biggest garlic in my husband's hands, but about 5% look like that!!! There is about 80% medium ones and the small ones I will put in jars as "crushed Garlic". In total there was only 10 garlics that was "bad". Although there is a lot medium ones, they are healthy! I gave my first garlic to my brother and he complimented me on their good taste.
Considering the fact that the circumstances was not "out of the book" I am very proud of the harvest. I must give God the glory because only HE can give life. I must also thank my neighbours for helping me with a tractor and Vanessa Pretorius for sponsoring VermiLife. It was the only fertilizer I gave!!!
The best thing is: A woman can handle garlic farming (with little bit help of a man). But the day to day tasks to grow garlic can be done by a woman
I think the most important thing is to start with good seed. You invest the same time, water, fertilizer on "good" or "take a chance" seed!!! And if your harvest is bad because of "bad" seed, you lose one year!!!! I was impressed with Garlic Farmers SA, seed.
I am looking forward to 2026 season. Will do my best to plant 1/4 hectare. Because I trust Garlic Farmers SA's seed I can multiply my first harvest (+ invest in new seeds every year).

The Garlic Growing Process

PLANTING
Garlic is always propagated from garlic cloves. The time to plant the garlic seeds is crucial for the success of cultivation. Our garlic farm experience taught us that garlic should be planted in the summer rainfall areas at the beginning of March through to April or when the weather starts cooling down.

GROWING
When the green tops start growing, by all means give a nitrogen rich fertiliser, but not when the plant starts forming it’s bulbs, then you want nutrients that will assist the bulbing.

HARVESTING
Stop watering 2 weeks before harvesting your garlic farm. You do not want to harvest wet muddy garlic! You will know your garlic is ready when you have 6 – 8 green leaves present and the bottom ones are brown and shrivelled. Repeat the process, by planting new garlic seeds again.
